Comix Influx Blog: Angoulême 2009 Nominees
The official selection for the Angoulême 2009 awards has just been released, and it’s a pleasingly diverse list.
Firstly, it’s great to see a few creators that have received the Comix Influx treatment amongst the nominees: Christophe Blain for Gus; Katherine Farmar favourite, Étienne Davodeau for Lulu femme nue from Futuropolis (his first nomination I believe); and Émile Bravo is back with his take on Spirou, after last year’s success of Ma Maman Est En Amérique….
Five books from L’Association make the list, more than twice as many as last year. JC Menu and Blutch are both nominated for the second year running (although for reprinted material in Blutch’s case). Critics favourite, Emmanuel Guibert gets in for the third volume of La Guerre d’Alan. The other two from L’Asso are Les Amis by François Ayroles and – one of the more striking nominations – Le Tricheur, by Ruppert et Mulot, the eccentric darlings of the European avant-garde. This looks to me like a strong showing for L’Asso
I hadn’t heard of Cambourakis before, but it looks like a really interesting small publisher. They published Mon Frère Nocturne by Joanna Hellgren, which I will certainly look out for.
Éditions de l’an 2 now seem to be called Acte Sud l’An 2, making Actes Sud’s takeover of the publisher more explicit; I think I’ve flicked through their nominee La Jeune Fille et le Nègre by Judith Vanistendael. Unsurprisingly, it depicts the tensions (particularly familial) arising from a mixed-race relationship, and, to be honest, in the brief look that I got it struck me as a somewhat old-fashioned treatment of the subject. But I could well have missed something in my quick skim.
In an outpouring of taste, Le Goût du chlore by Bastien Vivès (from Casterman’s KSTR imprint) looks interesting, as does Le Goût du paradis by Nine Antico (but then it’s always taking a look at anything from Ego comme X). I don’t know anything about Séquelles by Hugues Micol (Cornélius), nor 3 Déclinaisons from L’employé du Moi, but, judging books by their covers, I will check them out.
From the Anglophone world we have Filles Perdues by Moore and Gebbie; Dash Shaw’s Bottomless Belly Button, riding high on the indie-comic zeitgeist; Magic Elf by James Kochalka; Tamara Drew by Posy Simmonds; Tony Millionaire’s Oncle Gabby; and, slightly incongruously, Wanted by Mark Millar et al.
So, a strong list again this year. I was slightly surprised by the number of creators that have been nominated before, and many for the second year running, but there are also some interesting new voices in there too. Now, let’s see what Dupuy and Berberian’s jury makes of them.
Update: Read Bart Beaty’s detailed take on the nominations at comicsreporter.com.
