Comix Influx Blog: Preview: Travelling Square District by Greg Shaw

by Stephen Betts (thisisstephenbetts) on 26th March 2010

I picked up Travelling Square District by Greg Shaw (Sarbacane), which looks fascinating. It’s all clean lines, very architectural. All the panels are square, but in different sizes, and just about all the action is shown as long-shots. It seems to be several interlocking stories, using some flashback (signalled by switching to black and white). One part of it takes place in a modern art gallery, giving Shaw an excuse to focus in on abstract, brightly-coloured dots which harken back to his previous, very conceptual work for Cinquième Couche% and Atrabile. They seem to be somewhat in service to the story here, but this is still an experimental book for the formalists amongst us.

More once I’ve actually read it…
