Comix Influx Blog: Flemish Graphic Novels Night
I was fortunate to be invited to a Flemish Graphic Novel Night at Flanders House in London on Monday evening.
The highlights were certainly Brecht Evens and Randall C reading along with their new comics, both due out in the Summer: The Wrong Place (by Evens, from Drawn & Quarterly) and Sleepyheads (by Randall C, from our friends at Blank Slate Books).
I captured them both for posterity. But I suspect posterity will probably a little disappointed with the sound quality, although I’m sure it’ll be too polite to mention it.
I chatted a little bit with Randall and Brecht before they got started, as they practiced their pronunciation of “antibiotics” and “whinnying”, which was quite confusing until I heard them reading from their comics.
Evens and Randall were both great – charming and enthusiastic. And their comics looked beautiful, helped on by their enthusiastic renditions.
In addition, Doug Wallace of Self Made Hero presented their upcoming book “Dance By The Light of the Moon” by Judith Vanistendael. It’s a story about a romance between a young Flemish woman and an immigrant to Belgium. The title is an allusion to the Edward Lear’s The Owl and The Pussycat This will be published in October this year.
The night was introduced by Inès de Bien of the Flemish Literature Fund and Paul Gravett. Delightfully, the Flemings provided us with delicious Belgian beers and waffles! I really like Belgium.
