Yet more Guardian articles...
This is mostly just taken from my latest blogpost, but the Guardian is really ramping up its comics coverage. Just today there is an interview with Jim Steranko by Jonathan Ross (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/jul/21/jim-steranko-comics-jonathan-ross), where Steranko informs us that as a youth Federico Fellini translated American comics, particularly Flash Gordon, into Italian. There you go – that’s Comix Influx-relevant!

Re: Bastille Day!
Hi Stephen -
Thanks for the kudos !
It wasn’t an easy job, but I tried to give a fairly varied overview. I limited myself to books that I actually have, and to books that in some way told me something about France.
hope you liked them, and please keep the comments coming !

Re: Bastille Day!
Hi,
I really love the way he creates absurd stories with strange characters. His work has evolved and he could indeed be included in the “nouvelle vague” movement with blain or sfar. The first album he made was “L’enclave” a strange surrealistic and philosophic story. Nice but not his best. His first “hit” is L’idiot (1995) wich won the best album prize at Angouleme and the Rene goscinny price. It’s a very good story and a good way to discover his work even if the drawings seem a bit old now. He already had his style to caricature faces and postures. (I think there is a strong uderzo culture…

Re: Bastille Day!
Hi Antoine,
I haven’t read anything by Dumontheuil, but I did recognise his Big Foot books for Futuropolis. Was one of them (volume 3?) nominated for an Angoulême prize?
Yeah, I agree with Håkan that there’s something of Blain in there…
Stephen.

Re: Bastille Day!
Looks similar to “nouvelle vague” artists such as Joann Sfar and Blain.

Thanks for this list. I still haven’t read anything by Davodeau but Un homme est mort is really shown often as a must. Do any of you know Nicolas Dumontheuil’s work? He is one of my favourite author and he is not enough famous. :)

Bastille Day!
Hello,
our friends at Forbidden Planet International are celebrating Bastille Day!
A bunch of comics celebrities recommend their favourite French comics at http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/2010/bastille-day/, and then Wim has come up with a great “14 for the 14th” list – a diverse list, ranging tastes, and the ages.
Here’s what they chose:
Kenny Penman: Plus ou Moins by Peggy Adams (http://www.peggy-adam.com/), and Sergent Laterreur by Touïs and Frydman (with a partial translation at http://comixinflux.com/influx/show/7) Ian Rankin chooses Echos des Savane (complete with Wolinkski cover…

Re: A few links
I’ll attempt a rough translation of Beaunez’s cartoon.
-Profession? -Fucked.
The second cartoon seems to be a pun on “maison close” (“closed house”, earlier euphemism for bordello,) where Catherine claims the organization Artémisia is open to everyone who “doesn’t want to enter into guys’ stuff”?
But my French is very basic, so feel free to correct all my mistakes.

I touch on the remarks of Montellier and others in Artemisia near the end of the paper, although the issue is really secondary to what my interest is in the piece. It would take a whole other article to tease out the ideological implications of the piece. It’s certainly an avenue well worth exploring.
