Page 2
November 3rd, 1889. Having left Mourmansk, “The Anjou” sails through the Arctic Ocean on its way to Le Havre. The sea is calm, but falling snows rend visibility negligible.
Panel 1
The long expanse of the mail-ship seeks out a path through the giant icebergs that drift by, menacing, just a short distance from the ship.
Panel 2
These immense mountains of ice escort the vessel, vexing figures like prison guards waiting for a single, unpredictable order, at which they will turn and harpoon the ship, their charge. The dread their presence instills weighs heavy on the crew.
Page 3
The watch is doubled. The men on watch scan every inch of the black water. On board, everyone lives in fear of a collision.
Panel 1
The captain and first mate go out on the poop deck, keeping an eye on the course taken by each iceberg – some of the largest are right in the ship’s path.

Captain! Portside! Look!
Captain! Portside! Look!
Panel 3
I’ve never seen anything like it! There can’t be anyone left on board. Still, let’s signal, anyhow. Cut the engines.
