About This Book

I’m translating the French L’Intégrale volume collecting the first four books in the series, after which I’ll try the next three from German. The translations will be idiomatic rather than literal, and as my French isn’t great anyone’s welcome to improve on what I turn out. As I’m using L’Intégrale the numbering refers to story page numbers rather than book page numbers.
In book two Kim Nelson learns more of her grandmother’s life as she herself is endangered in modern day Turkey by people wanting a lost treasure to which she may hold clues. There’s no shortage of nudity, and sex in all volumes, but while undeniably erotic, Djinn is more than an excuse for exciting pubescent boys.

[1:1] I’m looking for a woman.
[1:2] drawn as a black devil.
Ebu Sarki. That man is the devil.
[1:3] Ibram: The devil doesn’t impress me. He’s like the others. He only hears what’s in his interest.
Trader: Keeping quiet is in my best interest.
[1:4] One sometimes regrets keeping silent.

[2:1] Ibram: How can I find Ebu Sarki? It’s the last time I’ll ask the question.
[2:2] There is an old man, with Meiyed. He once worked for Sarki. He’s seen a lot.
[2:3] I hope his responses are more satisfying than yours. Otherwise fire could destroy your shop in no time.
[2:4] Meiyed: The old man? Yes, he’s here. You want to talk with him?
Ibram: You have an objection?
[2:5] Me, no. He might.
[2:6] You knew Ebu Sarki. Can you tell me about him?
[2;7] What?!!

[3:2] His tongue’s been cut out. He doesn’t speak. He doesn’t communicate in any form. He’s too frightened. Like all those who’ve served Ebu Sarki.
[3:3] I’m wasting time. They all died of fright. I’ll have to find another way.
[3:4] It’s been a while since I was here. How strange. Time appears to have stood still.
[3:5] Ghosts can appear.
[pp;4]
[4:1] I’m looking for a woman.
[4:2] But I don’t know if I really want to find her.
[4:4] So the fish nibbles at the bait.

[5:1] Mustapha: You, here. You could be recognised.
Jade: So? The Sultan’s favourite is free. She goes where she wishes.
[5:2] Jade: Our man is ready?
Mustapha: He’s paid enough for that.
[5:3] It’s time to retreat,
[5:4] Don’t be afraid my bold cavalier. Go on… go on… The show will be worth your wait.
[5:5] Lord Nelson, over here.

[6:1] Samuel: Apparently you’re looking for me.
Lord Nelson: I’m looking for the scoundrel who blackmails me by attacking my wife.
[6:2] Samuel: I see his excellency the ambassador has put you in the picture.
Lord Nelson: He’s shown me certain photographs.
[6:3] Samuel: Oh, a few representations of life in the harem. They fluster the minds of our compatriots.
Lord Nelson: You seem to know a lot about it.
[6:4] Samuel: I have my methods, it’s true. What is it that interests you?
Lord Nelson: What’s your price?
[6:5] To introduce you to the saint of saints. It’s not without risk. Sultan Murati jealously guards his protogées. His last acquisition for example…
[6:6] Don’t talk about my wife like that or I’ll fracture your skull.
[6:7] Oh my Lord, it’s no use getting so worked up. Me, I’m here to help you.
[6:8] And I’ll prove it. We’ll met again tomorrow night at the blue house in the Karakov Quarter. Come alone and unarmed.

[7:1] Ibram: Alone and unarmed. She’ll be waiting. The master’s good will.
[7:2] Kim: Well?
Ibram: No, I didn’t manage it.
[7:3] Kim: Manage what?
Ibram: To avoid the waiting test as they call it.
[7:4] Kim: Test?
Ibram: They’ll let us stew for a day, two perhaps.
[7:5] Under that tent is where Ebu Sarki comes to meet those who want to join him.
[7:6] Kim: Tell me your man is not an idiot.
Ibram: He takes precautions. And he’s sizing you up. The weakest always give up.
[7:7] Kim: I don’t give up that easily.
Ibram: I know, but I warn you, you will be alone until he arrives. If I stay in the vicinity he’ll not turn up.

[8:5] Don’t trust yourself if someone comes.
[8:6] If he doesn’t say the name Ebu Sarki…
[8:7] ...don’t move. And don’t accept anything on offer.

[15:9] Anyway, she doesn’t seem in any danger. See how she’s abandoned herself among his followers. She’s developed a taste for it. My word!

[16:6] Lady Nelson: But I want to please you, not the Sultan.
Jade: Anyone wishing to pleasure Jade, pleasures her master.

[17:3] Asherdan: You must obey without hesitation.
Kim: This thing’s a nightmare.
[17:4] Kim: And my thirty lovers? Will you choose them?
Asherdan: I shall not deceive you. Your nights will be long.
[17:5] Kim: That’s good. I’m currently insomniac. I accept your proposition.
Asherdan: You have spirit.
[17:6] We will extinguish that pride. You will be punished for the slightest deviation, and you shall learn to fear my name…

Sultan: Away from prying eyes. The location is suitable I hope.
[18:3] Hawkins: Perfect. I never tire of this view, the splendour of the scene.
Sultan: You are a happy man.
[18:4] Hawkins: I would like to be, but these are difficult times.
Sultan: Difficult for whom?
[18:5] Hawkins: For one of my attaches. You know him I believe, Lord Nelson.
Sultan: We’ve had meetings. A gentleman. And his wife is charming.
[18:6] Hawkins: Charming to the point of annexing her for your harem your excellency?
Sultan: I never annex anyone Sir Hawkins. I purchase.
[18:7] Hawkins: Your excellency purchased Lord Nelson’s wife?
Sultan: I believe she’s come of her own accord. I’ll tell her to write her husband a letter to this effect.

Sultan: Lady Nelson chose this yoke. It seems it is not that of her husband. What can I do?
[19:2] Hawkins: Return her.
Sultan: Do you take me for a brute? I respect Lady Nelson’s wishes. She is free. She can return whenever she wants.
[19:3] Sultan: This is a private affair with no bearing on our diplomatic relations. Are we agreed on that?
Hawkins: Your excellency leaves me no choice. She understands, however, that I cannot be responsible for the actions of Lord Nelson.
[19:4] Hawkins: Diplomacy washes out of a man mocked, insulted, enraged…
Sultan: It’s up to him to win his wife back, sir, we won’t stand in his way.
[19:5] Lord Nelson: Win my wife back!!! How dare he?
[19:6] I realise it’s provocative, but we cannot intervene directly. If this scandal escalates you’ll be forever ridiculed.
[19:7] Your wife has dropped in it. I’m sorry, but if you want to play the cavalier you’ll have top retrieve her on your own.

[32:1] Consider. A woman in your situation with a child. It’s daft. Or worse. An act of love. That you cannot afford, I believe. But at the moment you successfully conceal the truth from Lady Fazila.
[32:2] But imagine if I were to tell her your little story. You owe plenty of money, and she’d not want you any more. You’re for sale. I’d buy you at the lowest price…
[32:3] ...to give you to Kémal. You know his tastes. He’s violent. And more, your child would be left with him. At least he’d occupy you both equally. He’s versatile in his outlook.
[32:4] Ziria: What do you want to know?
Amin: Where do I find Kim Nelson? I’m aware she’s stayed in contact with your mistress.
[32:5] Ziria: That’s right. Through the interference of Ibram Malek they have been summoned somewhere. I’ll try to overhear one of their conversations.
Amin: Try isn’t good enough. I need results, and fast.
[32:6] You’ll have what you want. I promise you.
[32:7] Perfect. Give me the name of the Captain who deals with your child. I know many people. I’ll try to obtain favourable treatment.
[32:8] Ziria: If you could do that I’ll be yours body and soul.
Amin: Souls tire me, and it’s been a long time since a woman’s body interested me.
[32:9] Apart from her, perhaps. Yes, there are days when I definitely accept it.

[33:5] As I understand it, that leaves 29.
[33:6] Kim: What’s the matter? Goodness! You’re jealous.
Ibram: I don’t understand.
[33:7] Ibram: I don’t understand how a girl like you can come to this. Why are you doing this? For the money?
Kim: For the money!
[33:8] For the money! Everybody has it. A little more, a little less. There’s only a step between wealth and poverty. I saw that well enough with my mother. She worked all day long as a typist, and at night there were more tasks, documents that she worked on until all hours. I was young, but I already understood.

[34:1] Kim: What she lived for, my mother, she’d let me hold it, a memory of my grandmother. Her destiny, this magic within her that she believed she would find in me.
Ibram: The magic of a woman who devoted herself without ever loving.
[34:2] Kim: What do you mean, without ever loving? I believe she lived passionately for my grandfather Lord Nelson.
Ibram: How you experience grand passion with me?
[34:3] Kim: You’ve not got the right to judge me in this way. I sense within me this, power, this will that Jade had, adn which she’s passed to me through my blood.
Ibram: You want to become like her? Exercising your power in a harem? You’ve never come across the humiliation and the bullying.
[34:4] Try to understand. For a woman like Jade there were no humiliations. A body, a bell that briefly rings, it’s forgotten, it disappears. It’s of no importance.
Ibram: Happy to hear it. And me, have I already finished ringing?
[34:5] Idiot. You i love.
[34:6] Kim: But I need to continue. When I arrive at the heart of the harem, at Ebu Sarki, It’s there that I’ll find the answers to my questions.
Ibram: For example, where one finds Sultan Murati’s treasure.
[34:7] Kim: Stop right there. It’s you who brought the question of money to the table. There are other things.
Ibram: Okay then, get along.
